Here you’ll find helpful resources to get you started, including details about Try Hockey for Free, how to register, answers to frequently asked questions, and what to expect for the season ahead. Whether you’re lacing up skates for the first time or joining our community from another program, this is your starting point for a great hockey experience.

Getting Started: The Basics

What to Expect

Youth hockey is a fun, fast-paced sport that helps kids build skills, confidence, and lifelong friendships. The early levels (Mighty Mites and Mites) focus heavily on learning to skate, basic stickhandling, and enjoying the game in a supportive environment.

When We Play

Our season generally runs from mid-October to late February.

  • Practices start in mid-to-late October.

  • Games (for Squirts and up) begin in early November.

Important: Due to rink scheduling and winter weather, schedules can change. Please check your team's SportsEngine calendar regularly for the most accurate times and locations.

Essential Equipment

The right gear keeps your player safe and warm. While a full equipment list is in the Handbook, here are the absolute essentials your player needs:

  • Helmet with cage/full face mask

  • Shoulder pads

  • Elbow pads

  • Gloves

  • Breezers (hockey pants)

  • Shin guards

  • Skates

  • Stick

  • Mouthguard

  • Neckguard

Volunteering & Fundraising

Prairie Centre Hockey is powered by our volunteer families!

  • Volunteering: We use the online DIBS system (accessible through our website) to track all required volunteer hours. You'll find opportunities like clock operation, concessions, and event help.

  • Fundraising: Participation in annual fundraisers (like our Croissant Sale and Calendar Raffle) is crucial to keeping hockey affordable for everyone.

Try Hockey For Free

Prairie Centre Hockey’s Try Hockey for Free is the perfect way for kids to experience the excitement of hockey — no commitment, no cost. Skaters register for one two-hour session, and can stay for the full time or just as long as they feel comfortable.

We provide skates and basic equipment, so your child can safely get on the ice and give hockey a real try. Beyond skating skills, hockey teaches cooperation, teamwork, and respect — qualities that carry off the ice as much as on it — while creating lasting friendships along the way.
